Hayden Horner:
Hayden's Diary is a provocative column written by PlusNews journalist
Hayden Horner, highlighting his personal experiences as a young South
African living with HIV. The diary was started to try to counter the stigma
attached to HIV/AIDS and hence the refusal by many in Southern Africa to
admit that they have it ,or seek treatment. The aim is to encourage others
to speak openly about the virus, tackling the stigma and denial."

Oziel Njengabantu Mdletshe
After having been diagnosed HIV positive in 1997, Oziel (38) joined National
Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA). Here he became involved
in the forefront of a Disclosure and Acceptance Campaign from 1998. Oziel
became an HIV activist who led by example and was among very few males from
KZN to disclose and accept living with HIV.
"Being open publicly it was from my heart, because I was diagnosed without
knowing how I got the virus like many people, and felt that I need to
address this issue to the public. Facing stigma and discrimination of people
living with HIV, a lot of courage and positive living is needed from me."
Oziel has held a number of talks at workplaces and churches. Workers and
church members have benefited a great deal from these talks and workshops,
and have led to the formation of support groups.
Being a trained counsellor and living with HIV, Oziel does counselling in
the household, families and individuals. He has lost his sister, daughter,
brother and brother-in-law to AIDS.
"HIV/AIDS has been a reality in my family."
